Self container collections from Toby Carvery 🍽️

Everything Food Waste Heroes need to know about self-container collections from Toby Carvery: what containers to bring, food safety, and how to list your roast.

📦 Preparing your containers

Why do I need to bring my own containers?
Toby Carvery doesn't provide packaging, so you'll bring reusable containers and staff will fill them for you.

What containers should I bring?
Bring a mix of sizes so everything's packed cleanly:

Container size

Contents

Recommended amount

Large (5-10L)

Meat, veg, mac and cheese, other

6

Medium (2-4L)

Meat, veg, mac and cheese, other

4

Small (under 2L)

Sauces and gravy

2

Clean plastic or paper bags

Yorkshire pudding

2

That's roughly 9 to 15 containers in total, though it varies by day and site.

Any tips for choosing containers?

Pack different food types separately and make sure everything's properly cleaned before you go. Short on containers? Post a Wanted listing on Olio and a fellow Olio-er might have spares.

⏰ Before your collection

When should I arrive?
Arrive 10 minutes before your collection slot. That gives staff time to pack the food properly.

Do I need to do anything when I get there?
Introduce yourself to a member of staff and show them your Olio ID.

🍽️ During your collection

What food will I receive at Toby Carvery?
Hot roast items: meats, potatoes, veg, Yorkshire puddings, and sauces.

How will staff pack my containers?
Hand your containers over and staff will fill them with whatever's available that day. They'll keep food types separate, though it's fine for some veg to be packed together (like peas and carrots).

What temperature does the food need to be?
Hot food must be 63°C or hotter at the point of collection.

What if I think the food's gone cold?
Ask staff to check the temperature, or reject the food if you're not confident it's safe.

How do I know what's in each container?
Staff will hand over a label listing the contents. Requesters can cross-check this against Toby Carvery's allergen page, so make sure you include it in your listing.

📝 Listing on the app

How do I list what I've collected?
Add one listing called 'Roast'. Upload a single photo showing all your containers, describe exactly what's inside (for example carrots, roast potatoes, pork), select the right amount of items, and ask requesters to bring their own containers.

How many items should I list?
Estimate how many meals you've collected (how many people you reckon you can feed) and list that as your item count. One item is one meal.

How do I decide how much to give each requester?
Allocate based on the number of meals you're sharing. Ask requesters how many people they're feeding so you can give them the right amount.

Do requesters need to bring anything?
Yes, remind them to bring their own containers too.

🤝 Sharing your collection

How long can I keep my listing up?
You can list until midnight, but all food needs to be shared by the end of the day. Toby Carvery's food safety guidelines don't allow next-day donations, so listing in advance helps you share everything on time.

What if I can't share everything before the deadline?
Share it elsewhere or keep it for yourself, and mark it as pick-up arranged (PUA) so it still counts as saved food. Kitchen staff can often tell you how many meals they've packed, which helps you plan ahead.

🛠️ Problems and issues

There's no food available when I arrive, even though my slot was confirmed. What do I do?
Report this using the Issue Report Form as soon as possible so we can follow up with the restaurant.

What if I'm not sure whether the food is safe to take?
Trust your judgement. If anything looks or feels wrong, leave it and report the issue. You won't be penalised for skipping food that doesn't meet safety standards.

What if a staff member asks me to do something that doesn't seem right?
Don't follow instructions that go against your Olio training. Report it as soon as possible via the Issue Report Form.

What if I miss my collection?
Toby Carvery is an important partner, so reliability matters. If you know in advance you can't make it, let your Squad Chat know or unassign from your slot in the app.

Missing a collection without warning may lead to a formal warning ⚠️ or losing access to future slots.
