Unrated Food Waste Heroes

Why does Olio allow newbies and/or unrated users to become Food Waste Heroes?

As we continue to grow the Food Waste Hero Programme, it is critical that we continue to recruit new FWHs to ensure we can successfully collect and redistribute surplus food from our business partners.

We believe that everyone has the potential to be a fantastic volunteer, making a positive impact on their community and reducing food waste. That's why we welcome newbies to become Food Waste Heroes (FWHs).

The vast majority of new volunteers do a great job. In fact, only 12% of collections by first-time FWHs have flag reports, compared to 13% for all FWHs.

Most of the flag reports we receive (71%) are specific to the FWH program (e.g date not pictured or unsafe surfaces), rather than the general ability to use the app. Therefore, preventing inexperienced Olio-ers from becoming FWHs wouldnโ€™t necessarily prevent these issues or make them more ready to correctly share food collections as a FWH.

Instead, we will continue to welcome newbies and/or unrated users to the FWH program and invest in improving our safeguards for all FWHs. This includes providing clear guidelines and training, as well as automating our monitoring systems.
