Social media guidelines for Food Waste Heroes

Our top tips for creating social media content about your Food Waste Hero collections, including language to use, framing ideas, and food safety standards.

We love seeing the content you share on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook showcasing your surplus food collections. Your videos are a powerful way to spread the word about our mission and show the impact of our redistribution partnerships.

To make sure we continue to accurately represent the partners who donate food, and maintain our strong working relationships with them, here are some guidelines to follow when creating content about your collections.

🎯 Getting the language right

The way we describe the food we rescue matters. Using the right language helps make sure our donation partners' efforts are accurately represented, and shows exactly what you're helping Olio and those partners to achieve.

Words to use:

  • Surplus food, spare food, or unsold food

  • Rescuing, redistributing, sharing

  • Difficult times or financial stress

Words to avoid:

  • "Food saved from landfill" or "food saved from the bin"

  • "Would have been thrown in the bin" or "would have been chucked away"

  • Poor

None of our partners currently send food waste to landfill (anything that can't be donated goes to Anaerobic Digestion to be converted into energy). Please avoid saying that rescued food has been "saved from landfill", so our partners' efforts around food waste are fairly represented.

🤝 Framing the partnership

Here are some ideas for how to frame your content:

  • Focus on impact: share how the food you've rescued is directly helping local communities and easing financial worries for people in your neighbourhood.

  • Celebrate the staff: if store colleagues are helpful or chatty during your collection, feel free to mention that.

  • Highlight the effort: mention how Olio's partners are responsibly addressing edible food waste by sharing it with local people.

🛡️ Food safety is priority number one

We're always impressed by our Food Waste Heroes' high standards around hygiene and cleanliness, and our partners trust us because of our industry-leading Food Safety Management System. Your content should always reflect these high standards.

  • Never show unsafe sharing: don't film or post content showing food left in unsafe locations, such as in bin bags outside or unrefrigerated on a front wall.

  • Keep it clean: show rescued food on clean, wipeable surfaces, never on the floor.

  • Follow the rules: any food safety breaches spotted in social content could lead to a formal warning ⚠️ or suspension 🟠 from the programme.

Thank you for being such an engaged and vital part of the Olio community. Together, we're making a huge difference.
